Saying yes to inconvenience
One of the goals, I’m working on with my family is prioritizing family mealtimes – that includes sitting down eating with other, with no distractions. Of course, in this digital world, it’s so difficult to disconnect. Now that we’ve got two kids, I’m really intentional about the face-to-face interactions during meals. A lot of times, that means saying yes to inconvenience. Bedtimes may be looming, but it’s important to allow all of us to pause, enjoy our food and take part in the family conversation.
Here’s how I’m planning to do that:
- Prep meals ahead of time
- Explore different themes and dishes
- Stop stressing perfection
- Include kids in meal preparations
- Plan family game nights.
My husband and I love to tackle meal prepping over the weekend so that during the week, we’re not stressing what’s for dinner. All we’ve gotta do at that point is pop the food in the microwave!
We’ve got a 9-month-old baby and toddler so we’ve gotta mix it up with different themes for dinners and dishes for family celebrations.
The idea of perfection can be a double edged sword. Unless the house is completely spotless, and errands are done, it can be a little hard to want to invite guests over.
We’ve found that involving our toddler in the meal prepping will make her more inclined to want to try what’s for summer.
Planning family game nights is a big goal for us. We’ve got the board games, we’ve just gotta coordinate the logistics.
